Nokia builds greenest mobile phones

When it comes to environmentally friendly mobile phones, Nokia rules the pack according to a ranking by Switzerland’s largest phone company Swisscom.Swisscom has just started awarding eco-points for mobile phones evaluating them in terms of power consumption, energy used for manufacture and choice of raw materials.
The assessment was made in partnership with myclimate, an independent foundation, which investigated the ecological footprint of phones offered by different manufacturers.
Eight of the ten greenest products listed are devices by Nokia. Two mobiles from Sony Ericsson are also among the top ten.
The Nokia C3-01 was awarded the highest rating of the current best-selling phones. Also very environmentally friendly are the Sony Ericsson Zylo music mobile and the Nokia X7 smartphone with its large 4-inch AMOLED touch screen.
Models are awarded from one to five eco-points. The points are allocated based on publicly available data. For example, the less power used by a charger and the mobile in stand-by mode, the more eco-points a device is awarded.
All mobile phones in the Swisscom Online Shop have been labeled with eco-points, and from this autumn onwards, those in Swisscom Shops and the Swisscom Shop Magazine will be similarly labeled. New models will be evaluated on an ongoing basis using the same criteria.
