Lappeenranta University of Technology invests in wind and solar power

A wind turbine will soon begin to generate electricity on the campus of the Lappeenranta University of Technology and is to be used as a demonstrator both for teaching and research. Professor Juha Varis from the University explains that if the turbine were to turn at its optimal efficiency for 10.5 days it would generate the equivalent electricity needed by a 200 square metre house for one whole year.
Renewable energy is also going to become a preferred option in the future in Lappeenranta as, over the next two years, the wind turbine on campus will be joined by a solar energy recovery system based on solar panels. The energy that these produce should be enough not just for study purposes but also to charge the electric cars, scooters and bicycles used on campus. Renewable energy will also be used for lighting on the campus area and in the Tervahaudanpuisto park as well as in the future for power the electric bus on its route to the university.
The turbine is part of the Green Campus project. This project will demonstrate how, with the aid of science and technology, it is possible to solve ecological problems and to build a sustainable world.
